Creating Visibility Barriers
Last updated: October 17, 2026
A visibility barrier limits which employees can see information about other employees. When a barrier applies, the protected employees' profiles, disclosures, and certifications are visible only to the supervisors you name. Set one up when a group's records, such as an executive team's, should be reviewed by a small set of people instead of everyone with access to the people directory.
Before you begin
Each barrier has two sides. The supervisor group is the people who are allowed to view the data. The visibility group is the employees whose data is protected. Both must have at least one group or individual before you can create the barrier.
Create a visibility barrier
- Open the settings. From the people directory, go to Permissions and groups. Visibility barriers are listed alongside the group settings.
- Start a new barrier. Open the "Create visibility barrier" panel and enter a clear Display name. A descriptive name makes the policy easy to recognize as your list of barriers grows.
- Choose the supervisor group. Under "Supervisor group", select the employees who can view the information of the visibility group. You can pick existing groups, individual people, or both. For example, to let only one person view an executive team's data, select that individual.
- Choose the visibility group. Under "Visibility group", select the employees who can be viewed by the supervisors. Their profiles, disclosures, and certifications become visible only to the supervisors you named.
- Add exclusions if needed. Exclusions let you carve out anyone who shouldn't fall under this barrier. For example, if a supervisor should review everyone on the executive team except one specific leader, exclude that leader here. This keeps the policy precise, so you don't need a second, narrower barrier.
- Create the barrier. Click "Create". The button stays disabled until the name, the supervisor group, and the visibility group are all filled in. If you leave a group empty, you will be asked to select at least one group or individual.
What happens next
A confirmation message, "Policy created", appears and the barrier takes effect immediately across the platform. To adjust a barrier later, open it from the same visibility barriers list and edit its supervisors, visibility group, or exclusions.
